Family
The Genesee County Mental Health Association recognizes that when a family member is diagnosed with a mental illness, families often wonder what they can do to help. Although new forms of therapy and medication make it possible for many individuals to lead full, independent lives, the support of family, friends and peers remains an essential element in the recovery process.
The Mental Health Association currently has resources available free of charge to help families. The MHA also offers family consultation to family members or loved ones who need info about mental illness and its treatment, the mental health system, providing care to their family members, community resources, and how to cope with and adapt to their relatives needs and circumstances.
Mental Illness in the Family is a brochure that gives support strategies for family members. Click here for a downloadable copy.
Navigating the Mental Health System in Genesee County: A Guide for Families provides a more in-depth look at mental illness, including symptoms, types, medications, and relapse. Crisis management, community supports, and financial considerations are also addressed.
If you are interested in obtaining a copy of either of these resources, please feel free to contact us at (585) 344-2611.
The MHA also partners with NAMI Rochester to provide help for families.
