MICA Services
The Mental Health Association's MICA program is a multifaceted program that provides education, advocacy, support, empowerment and drop-in services for the MICA population in Genesee County. This program also provides current education on MICA issues to peers and professionals. This is accomplished through affiliation with various treatment teams, community task forces, forensic treatment, prevention programs, and by providing conferences and on site workshops to agencies and/or peer groups.
What is MICA?
MICA stands for Mental Illness/Chemical Addiction, often referred to as “Dually Diagnosed” or “Co-occurring” Disorders. MICA refers to an individual with a substance abuse problem and a psychiatric illness or diagnosis.
According to Dr. Kenneth Minkoff, an expert in MICA treatment, the expectation should be that anyone seeking treatment for chemical abuse/addiction or mental illness has the other as well.
According to the American Psychiatric Association, the percentage of individuals who are dually diagnosed and also have trauma histories is as high as 90%.
